Props and Costume

Planned Costumes 5 Main Characters – I am going to dress these figures in monochromatic, and slightly casual clothing, despite initially being ejected from a nightclub. In terms of makeup, I am taking inspiration from ‘neutral glam’/’no-makeup makeup’ looks when applying it onto those I have casted for my music video, both male and female. In order to strengthen the sense of it being a ‘teenage slasher’ parody, I am using SFX makeup to show the events within the narrative which I will be applying. ‘Assailant’ – This character will be dressed monochromatically and minimalistically, in simple black clothing. Given the mystery of the narrative, I do not want to employ bold clothing to draw away from the ambiguity I aim to create. I will also be using a mask, in order to reveal the identity of this character during the final shot. ‘The Shining’ Twins – As an intertextual reference, the two actors will wear pale blue dresses mimetic of the costume worn by the young girls in the...

Planned Original Images

I aim to include the following planned images through the band website to create a strong sense of band identity. I am also going to upload a number of these planned images onto the band instagram page '@wettableofficial' and connect this social media feed onto a section of the website. [Upload Planned Designs]

Planning the Band Images

Image
So that I could plan the set of photos which I will include in the band website, I did some research into elements and typical conventions which I should follow when it comes to promotional photography. I drew this information from these websites: https://digital-photography-school.com/11-tips-for-band-promotional-photography/ https://flypaper.soundfly.com/tips/10-interesting-band-photos-that-work-and-how-you-can-do-it-too/ I have concluded a list of several ideas which I am going to keep in mind while planning and producing the images. - Picking a location which matches the mood of the music and the genre. I am going to be using the same setting as my music video shooting location to ensure cohesion between all of the elements within my website. - Coordinating costume between all band members. To achieve this, I will be dressing the characters/band members in suitably monochromatic clothing for consistency and aesthetic appeal. - Ensuring it reflects the music. I tho...

Existing Webpage Analysis

Image
In order to understand the function of elements of websites so that I can produce my own, I chose to analyse a pre-existing webpage within the music industry. For this I chose Post Malone's as his work is very mainstream and I enjoy the aesthetic of how this is designed and marketed. Post Malone's loaded website home page initially focuses attention purely on his latest music video 'Circles'. Once the webpage is scrolled down, the menu bar appears to navigate to specific sections of information. Unlike conventional worded buttons, this menu bar design has implemented symbols to locate to merchandise, upcoming tour dates and events, the mailing subscription service sign-up and the music video. The 'spanner' symbol is hyperlinked to a separate website to showcase his merchandise whilst following a similar design in regards to design features including the background and typography. Under the 'cog' symbol, a directory of Post Malone...

Final Statement of Intent

Product 1 – The Music Video Using the song ‘Let’s Dance To Joy Division’ by The Wombats, I hope to create a lively music video in order to effectively appeal to a 16-24 year old demographic. I chose this song as its juxtaposing lyrics and sound symbolise the universal carelessness of people within this age range in combination with teenage angst. With regard to the performative elements within the video, I am going to focus structurally on the narrative factor, in addition to aspects of lip-syncing in order to engage with the audience. In terms of the aesthetic structure of the music video, I am going to employ the conventions typically found in music videos of the genre it belongs to (pop/indie-pop); this includes bright colouring, lighting and costume, symbolic of the fun-loving nature of the targeted viewers. Moreover, I will cast predominantly young characters of both gender, of similar age to the audience, so that they can identify and actively engage with the plot and ...

Placement of Logo and Title

After researching tutorials into how to do so, I plan to attach the band logo to the wall of the establishing shot within the music video. I will achieve this effect using Adobe After Effects, in order to 3D Motion Track the image onto the surrounding scene. I also intend to include the SONY logo, as a clear indication of the band's affiliation with the production company. I am going to insert this during the establishing shot as an initial focus for the viewer. [Insert Storyboard Walk-Through]

Website Flat Plan Draft

Image
This is the structural design of the home page for the band website I will create. Given that it is the initial impression the page-visitors will make, I am establishing the band's brand image with the central focus of the music video.  At the top of the webpage I have featured a mailing list sign-up option in order to encourage the consumers to interact actively with the band as well as be made aware of upcoming shows or band-related information, similar to that of the artists' websites I researched including that of The 1975 and Arctic Monkeys'. In the header of the webpage, various linked social media pages such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter will be included as well as online streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music to promote the audience's interaction with the band’s available media products. Moreover, I have included a menu bar which will give easy access specific information and interest points to ensure efficacy for website navigatio...

Band Website Research

Image
In order to gauge the key elements to include in the band website, I needed to analyse a series of pop artists' pages. I chose from a variety of different sub-genres within the pop music industry in order to understand the features which are consistent throughout and, thus, the essentials to include in my own.

Narrative Synopsis

Music Video Narrative Synopsis The music video follows the journey of a group of young people, initially being ejected from a nightclub, and continuing into a more rural and field-y area. I am following conventions of the teenage thriller/slasher film genre within the plot in order to strongly convey the messages of teenage naivety and carelessness which are featured in the lyrics of the song. To introduce the music video, after a visual overlay of the 'SONY Music' logo as well as the band name and song, the scene is established with diegetic sound, arguing in resisting being ejected from the nightclub. Following this, the group begin walking through the same alley walkway, stumbling, talking and laughing. Acting as a narrative volta, once one of the characters notices ominous shadows behind and attempts to alert their friends, the character is ultimately killed. Presented in an overly-characterised and stylized way to add humour to a dark idea at face value, I will n...

Key Elements of Band Website To Include

Key Elements for Band Website Drawn from Research A feature in the majority of current pop artists is to display their latest music video centrally, seen in my research for the websites of The 1975 and Ariana Grande. It is also important to include relevant, artist-related information, such as a tour calendar with upcoming shows, links to venue website and the ticket sales. Another is a current bio in order to tell the artist's story, their history, influences and accomplishments. Commonly featured in a designated sub-section is the artist's contact information, e.g. their PR or publicist contact for potential 'journalists and bloggers' to reach out to. Hi-Res PR Photography is consistently use in order to evoke a sense of quality and professionalism (shown by Rihanna). It's necessary to include a way to showcase their music, e.g. music player, embedded tracks or MP3 downloads. A shopping section to showcase merchandise, what is sold and ...

Shot List and Shooting Script

Planned Shot Types:  - General and neutral shots, i.e. l ong shots (to establish setting), medium shots, medium-close shots and eye-level angle shots. - Extreme close-ups – to focus on the details of the characters (e.g. fearful facial expressions) – for dramatic effect and evoke discomfort. - Over-the-shoulder shots – to highlight the interaction between the two types of people represented, while focusing on one perspective and emotion. - High Angle – to make the other character feel less powerful than the subject = ‘victim shot’. - Canted Frame – to highlight the disorientation of the situation in both a physical and symbolic sense. -  Point-of-View shots – to create a sense of voyeurism and focus the viewer on the feelings and situation of the other characters. Equipment: Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-HX350 Digital Camera, Tri-Pod. Costume: Because of the fact that within indie-pop music videos, costume is vastly not a predominant part of the visuals, resulting ...
