Narrative Synopsis
Music Video Narrative Synopsis
The music video follows the journey of a group of young people, initially being ejected from a nightclub, and continuing into a more rural and field-y area. I am following conventions of the teenage thriller/slasher film genre within the plot in order to strongly convey the messages of teenage naivety and carelessness which are featured in the lyrics of the song.
To introduce the music video, after a visual overlay of the 'SONY Music' logo as well as the band name and song, the scene is established with diegetic sound, arguing in resisting being ejected from the nightclub. Following this, the group begin walking through the same alley walkway, stumbling, talking and laughing.
Acting as a narrative volta, once one of the characters notices ominous shadows behind and attempts to alert their friends, the character is ultimately killed. Presented in an overly-characterised and stylized way to add humour to a dark idea at face value, I will not be directly showing excessive or detailed 'violence', and purely evoking inference by depicting the aftermath.
Unbeknownst to the rest of the group, they continue their journey through the town. To include anther location, in a fast-paced editing style similar to Wes Anderson, I am depicting the group entering a fast food restaurant, leaving, and whilst walking, littering the streets in a careless act of teenage angst. After another of the characters notices their friend missing, and whilst in attempt to alert the group, they are similarly killed in a humourous way.
This process of events is repeated for the third victim in the 'taxi', leading the remaining two unaware characters into the suburban area. In lead up until the penultimate 'death', in a, one again, comedic way, it is with this death which the central, lip-syncing figure of the music video finally becomes aware of the causalities which have occurred during the music video. During the choir section of the song's bridge, the shots focus on the 'child' voice by panning to 'The Shining Twins'. In recognising the situation, the remaining character begins desperately running. In their journey through the suburban neighborhood, they reach their house; in a frantic attempt to put their key through the door, the scene's tension heightens, but upon entering and trying to calm down, the character runs a shower. In a series of more relaxed shots, the 'assailant' is shown trying to enter the room in which they remove the mask, the reaction of the 'victim' is shown, and the music video is concluded.
